Biked from Southport, NC to Surf City, NC today. Total mileage: 4 on ferry, 47 on bicycles. Started with a fantastic breakfast in Southport & a delayed start to wait out the rain. Weather: high of 85, great breezes, no rain. Got into our campsite @ 6:30, pitched our teeny-tiny tent & made a nice cup of tea. Dinner: pork-n-beans from a can & strawberry ice cream. ;) » less

Mileage: 57, weather: 85-90 & sunny!! Left the campground early on Monday and stopped in town for a nice leisurely breakfast. Spent most of the day on the highways circumnavigating Camp LeJeune. Arrived in EI around 5:00 and spent a fabulous evening at a beach house with the Holleran/Meyer crew and their friends from upstate. A dip in the ocean, homemade dinner & air-conditioned sleeping quarters left us spoiled & happy. » less

Mileage: 60, weather 85 - sunny but not as hot as Monday. Today (Tuesday) was our longest day scheduled. We started the morning with many bridges over the InterCoastal Waterway, had a great lunch @ a small gas station in Otway, and a nice break @ a cute shop in Davis, NC. Biked through a Nat'l Wildlife Refuge (gorgeous!) & arrived @ our campground around 6:00pm. Pleasant dinner & quiet but HUMID night. » less

Mileage: 25 by ferry, 25 by bicycle; weather: 80-85. After a uncomfortable night of stifling hot air and sand-fleas (boo) we caught the 7:00am ferry to Ocracoke, NC. A two-hour ferry ride gave us plenty of time to sleep and we found an amazing diner for breakfast in cute Ocracoke. It was a nice slow and easy day as we caught another ferry after only 14 miles on the bike and then rode an add'l 12 miles into Hatteras by 3:00pm. We stopped at salt marshes, alien spaceships, light houses & even walked out to the actual point where the S. & N. Atlantic meet. Cooked our dehydrated meals for dinner & successfully weathered a terrific thunderstorm overnight. » less

Mileage: 43 miles, weather: 85-90 degrees and hot! Woke up after a great thunderstorm, 6 inches from our original location but relatively dry! Caught breakfast at a super tacky diner in N. Hatteras & ate a sandy, sandy lunch at a beach stop on the way. Passed the Bodie Island lighthouse and biked our last mile to the car around 5:00pm. Agreed that we earned a night in a hotel room & found a great place at Beach Haven Motel and a great dinner at Awful Arthur's. » less

Went to The Jolly Roger for breakfast this morning and enjoyed the pirate life. Then headed over to Jockey's Ridge for our hang-gliding class! AMAZING! Doing it again! Everyone should try it! Ended our beach trip with a great lunch at Tortuga's Lie and then made the trek back to our car in Southport, NC before heading home.
